The Protectorate

  • Human nation, Empire
  • Ruled by the Triarchy, three co-rulers elected for life from among the military, the temple, and the nobility
  • State religion honors the Divine Gold Dragon as an emissary of the gods, the first Archon as a prophet, and the heroes of the Protectorate as deified ancestors

The Protectorate of the Scarlet Throne stretches up and down the north-west coast of the Middle Sea, and west past the Seranth Hills and into the plains. The center of the Protectorate is the Homeland, a small territory centered on the Red City, capital and seaport. The Northmarch runs from the coast north of the Homeland, west along the northern mountains, bordering with the lands of the Giantkind. The Westmarch extends across the wooded hills and towards the foreign human nations to the far west. The Southmarch extends along the coast, its southern border still violently disputed with the orcs.

Just over two hundred years ago, three brothers were appointed by divine mandate to create a nation for humanity. The youngest raised an army, and took the title Polemarch. The eldest went into the mountains with the Dragon to learn how to better honor the gods, and came back with the title Hierarch. The middle brother took up the administration of justice and trade, and the title Archon.

The past century has been one of war with the Gratz uk Arki, the empire of the orcs. The armies of the last three Polemarchs pushed the southern border further each year, liberating the humans living there from the rule of orcs.

The current Archon focuses on consolidating the gains in the Southmarch. Upon being elected to the Scarlet Throne, she ordered the construction of a highway linking the Red City to the cities of the marches, extending the road south past the governor’s seat, nearly to the disputed border. The road currently stops in the city of Talon.
